Des Comtes Lafon, Meursault Clos De La Barre, 2018
The 2018 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre is a highly acclaimed white Burgundy, considered one of the most complete expressions of Meursault. It offers scents of waxy citrus rind, fresh pear, mandarin oil, and warm pastry. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, attractively deep, and complete, with a racy, structured, and serious character. This monopole vineyard has been owned by the Lafon family since 1894, with some vines planted in 1950, contributing to its mineral-driven profile. 【Iconic monopole vineyard】. Decanter rated this vintage 95 points, highlighting its focus, weight, harmony, depth, complexity, and palate-cleansing finish.
Food pairings for this elegant white Burgundy include rich seafood dishes, roasted chicken, creamy pasta, and mature cheeses. Its complexity and structure also make it a good match for dishes with truffle or subtle spice.
This wine is perfect for celebratory occasions, sophisticated dinner parties, or as a special treat for Burgundy enthusiasts. Its aging potential (drinking window 2021-2028, with some suggesting through 2038) also makes it suitable for cellaring for a few more years.
BACKGROUND
Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a wine producer in Burgundy, France, making some of the most lauded (and highly priced) white wines from Chardonnay in the region. The primary grape variety is Chardonnay, with a small portion being Pinot Noir. The estate is located in Meursault in the Côte de Beaune subregion, but has vineyards in three other villages: Chassagne-Montrachet, Volnay and Monthélie. Comtes Lafon's house and cellar were built in 1869 by the Boch family, but its reputation as a winery was most heavily influenced by Jules Lafon, who married Marie Boch in 1894.
