FEATURES
The 1994 La Romanée Grand Cru from Comte Liger-Belair is a rare and exceptional red Burgundy. La Romanée is a hallowed monopole vineyard, famously France's smallest PDO at just 0.87 hectares, nestled directly beside the legendary Romanée-Conti. For this 1994 vintage, the grapes were likely from vines managed under sharecropping agreements, with the wine bottled and marketed by négociants such as Bouchard Père et Fils, before Louis-Michel Liger-Belair re-established the family domaine's independent bottling from 2002.

After years in the cellar, this Pinot Noir reveals remarkable sophistication. Expect an explosion of black berries and spices, evolving into notes of smoke and undergrowth. It is typically very full-bodied, silky, and fresh on the palate, showcasing remarkable complexity and length. Tasting notes from the community also highlight dark fruit, wonderful balance, and a distinctive personality, with intense aromas of roses, black currant, raspberry, cherry, leather, earth, smoke, oak, coffee, and ripe strawberry. The palate often features ripe red fruit, leather, oak, and vanilla, culminating in a long, elegant finish with perfectly balanced tannins and acidity.
Given its age, this 1994 vintage should be handled with care. Old corks can be fragile, so a Durand or similar corkscrew is recommended. Decanting is advisable to allow the wine to breathe and shed any sediment, but do so gently and just before serving to preserve its delicate aromas. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
Food pairings for this exquisite red Burgundy include classic dishes like roasted duck, goose, and various game birds. Its complexity and earthy notes would also complement truffle-infused dishes, mushroom risottos, or fine cuts of roasted beef or lamb.
This wine is ideal for a truly special occasion, such as a milestone anniversary, a significant birthday for a Burgundy connoisseur, or an intimate gathering of serious wine collectors. It's a wine for contemplation and appreciation of history in a glass.
