FEATURES
The 1970 Fonseca Vintage Port is a truly magnificent expression, often lauded as the 【Pomerol of Vintage ports】 due to its lush, seductive character and complex, intense bouquet. The viticultural year saw ideal conditions, with a dry spring followed by timely rains, and a harvest under sunny days and cool nights, resulting in musts with tremendous depth of color. This Port, now at full maturity, still possesses the power to evolve for at least another decade.
Tasting notes reveal a medium red color with a clear rim, evolving into a deep brick red with a brownish halo. The nose is an attractive, rich, spicy, ripe bouquet of raisins, caramel, and resin, with exotic hints of clove, black fruits, allspice, ginger, and kirsch. On the palate, it offers good flavors of fig, blackberries, and chocolate truffle, with sweetness beautifully balanced by acidity. Other notes include dark dried plums, figs, cherries, brown sugar, spice, and a touch of pepper, all contributing to a lush, creamy, and multidimensional experience.
Given its age, this 1970 Vintage Port is a testament to the enduring quality of old-world winemaking, showcasing how these wines develop incredible complexity and tertiary notes over decades. However, with older bottles, one must approach with care. Old corks can be fragile, and capsules may show signs of age. It's advisable to stand the bottle upright for several hours, or even a day, before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Decanting is highly recommended, ideally 3-4 hours prior to serving, pouring slowly to leave the sediment behind. Serve between 16ºC to 18ºC.
🍴 This Port pairs perfectly with Stilton, aged Comté, blue-veined and other richly flavored cheeses, walnuts, and dried fruits like apricots or figs. It also harmonizes beautifully with chocolate and caramel desserts, or even apple pie with blue cheese crumbles.
🥂 This wine is ideal for a special occasion, a celebratory dinner, or a contemplative evening with good company, allowing you to savor its rich and complex flavors on their own. It's also a fantastic choice for a dedicated wine tasting, showcasing the evolution of a truly great Vintage Port.
