FEATURES
The 2006 Frescobaldi Mormoreto is a testament to a vintage marked by even and balanced weather conditions, which yielded wines of great elegance and impressive longevity. This flagship Bordeaux-blend from the historic Mormoreto vineyard, first planted in 1976, is only produced in the most favourable years, making the 2006 a particularly special release. Composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, this wine underwent 24 months of ageing in barriques followed by 6 months in bottle, contributing to its profound depth and refined character. Critics have lauded this vintage, with Falstaff awarding it 93 points.
Visually, the wine presents a purple-flecked deep ruby hue. The nose is dense and intense, offering a complex aromatic mosaic of ripe dark fruits like blueberry, blackcurrant, dried plum, raspberry, dates, and wild berry jam, enriched by spicy nuances of green pepper, ginger, and vanilla, alongside tobacco and liquorice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and gripping, unfolding with dense yet fine-grained tannins, rich dark berry notes, liquorice, and dark chocolate, culminating in a salty finish. Expect a lush, velvety texture, with bright cranberry and other red berry notes, fig, and cocoa.
This Mormoreto is a terrific partner for long-cooked meat dishes such as marinades, pot roasts, and stews, as well as game, grilled red meats, and aged cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with traditional Tuscan cuisine.
Given its age and longevity, the 2006 Mormoreto is perfectly suited for special celebrations, an important dinner, or a contemplative evening. It has shown it can withstand further ageing, especially in large formats.
For a wine of this age, careful handling is key. The cork might be fragile, so a Durand opener or similar two-pronged cork puller is recommended. Decanting is advisable to separate any sediment and allow the wine to breathe, revealing its full aromatic complexity. Allow at least an hour, but monitor its evolution. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
