FEATURES
The 2023 Azores Wine Company Acores Terrantez do Pico is crafted from the almost extinct Terrantez do Pico grape, a variety that winemaker António Maçanita has been instrumental in recovering. This unique grape is now gradually being replanted across approximately 30 hectares, marking a significant success story in viticulture. The wine beautifully showcases the potential of this indigenous grape within the extreme volcanic terroir of the Azores. The vineyards are uniquely situated in rock cracks at the foothills of the volcanic mountain, exceptionally close to the ocean, and are protected from strong, salty ocean winds by traditional stone walls known as "currais". The Azores Wine Company was founded with the mission to revive and champion the islands' rich, yet nearly forgotten, winemaking heritage.
This white wine presents a clean citrus color with an intense floral aroma, featuring notes of tea, bergamot, and iodine. On the palate, it offers a full attack with a distinct touch of iodine and salt, embodying a mineral, fresh, and salty character typical of the Azores terroir. It boasts good acidity, a hint of greasiness, and a pronounced saline component, with additional nuances of ripe citrus, lemon, stone dust, white flowers, grapefruit, and a laser-like saline sharpness combined with a stony texture. It is light-bodied, taut, and saline, often compared to a bone-dry Sauvignon Blanc but with enhanced saltiness, minerality, and a volcanic edge.
🍴 The Azores Wine Company Terrantez do Pico 2023 is a perfect partner for oysters and "cracas" (barnacles). It also pairs exceptionally well with grilled fish, fresh seafood, salads, and white meats. Specific recommendations include limpets, clams, prawns, grilled tuna, sea bass, salt cod, octopus, squid, crab, and salted almonds. For cheese lovers, it complements Queijo São Jorge, Queijo do Pico, fresh goat cheese, and Manchego Semi-Curado.
🥂 This wine is ideal for adventurous drinkers and seafood-centric meals. It serves wonderfully as an aperitif or when enjoyed with a fresh seafood platter on a warm, sunny day. 【Recovery of an almost extinct indigenous grape variety in a unique volcanic terroir】
