FEATURES
The 2011 Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial emerges from a vintage that, while challenging, yielded a wine of remarkable power and concentration, all while maintaining its inherent freshness. This prestigious Gran Reserva is only produced in selected vintages, underscoring its exclusivity. It's a masterful blend of 84% Tempranillo and 16% Mazuelo (Cariñena), sourced from the historic La Plana plot, planted in 1950 at an altitude of 485 meters. The Tempranillo underwent a lengthy 28-month maturation in American oak, while the Mazuelo spent the same duration in French barriques.
This Castillo Ygay offers an infinite and complex range of aromas, evoking ripe cherry, blueberries, and cassis, intertwined with refined touches of scrubland, Mediterranean herbs, black pepper, cloves, and mocha. James Suckling awarded it 98 points, praising its "extremely well-mannered, traditional character" and layers of savory complexity, including iron, dried meat, tobacco, balsamic fruit, orange peel, leather, and dried mushrooms. The palate is lively, enveloping, and harmonious, with silky tannins leading to a long, elegant finish. Wine Enthusiast, rating it 97 points, noted its deep violet-red hue, with a nose of raspberry, white chocolate, and juniper berry, and flavors of dark plum, black cherry, caramel, and violet. Despite its age, it remains remarkably youthful on the palate.

Its complexity and structure also make it an ideal match for other rich red meats, such as beef Wellington, or robust game dishes.
