FEATURES
🏰 The 1964 vintage in Bordeaux, particularly for the Right Bank where Château Canon La Gaffelière resides, is often considered a hidden gem, shining brightly despite being overshadowed by the legendary 1961. The growing season began with great promise, featuring a warm spring and successful, uniform flowering. While heavy rains in October impacted many Left Bank estates, the earlier-harvesting Right Bank appellations like Saint-Émilion largely escaped the worst, producing wines of remarkable quality that continue to captivate enthusiasts today. Recent tastings of the 1964 Château Canon La Gaffelière reveal a complex aromatic profile, with notes of red berries, a hint of brett, gravelly minerality, wet earth, mushrooms, and even bacon fat. Expect tertiary aromas like leather, farmyard, and dried leaves, alongside red fruits such as raspberries and cherries, all hallmarks of a beautifully aged Bordeaux. On the palate, it often presents with molten tannins, fresh acidity, and a fine structure, showing remarkable longevity. Some bottles offer a soft, silky, and smooth experience, laden with truffle, flowers, earth, tobacco, thyme, cherries, and dark, ripe strawberries. 【 This vintage is celebrated as one of those rare finds that offers exceptional quality for its price, provided it has been impeccably stored. 】 🥂 This venerable 1964 Château Canon La Gaffelière is perfectly suited for a milestone anniversary, a significant birthday celebration, or an intimate gathering of serious wine connoisseurs. Its age and complexity make it a focal point for reflection and appreciation. Given its considerable age, handling this bottle requires a gentle touch. Be mindful of the cork, which may be fragile, and the capsule. It's advisable to have a Durand or an Ah-So opener on hand. For serving, aim for a temperature of around 15.5 degrees Celsius (60 degrees Fahrenheit). While some older wines benefit from minimal decanting—just enough to separate any sediment—others, especially those in good condition, can be popped and poured, allowing them to evolve gracefully in the glass over 30-45 minutes. 🍴 This elegant Saint-Émilion pairs wonderfully with classic meat dishes such as roasted veal, slow-braised lamb shank, or a perfectly grilled beef tenderloin. It also complements game birds, rich mushroom-based dishes, and even certain Asian-inspired preparations that aren't overly spicy.
✧ A renowned estate affectionately nicknamed “Garfield” by Hong Kong wine lovers Promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) in 2012, a true elite among elites. Ranked No. 2 in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2015, earning widespread acclaim ✧ Located in one of the finest sites of Saint-Émilion Neighboring the Right Bank First Growth Château Ausone, sharing a remarkably similar terroir. A seamless fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques, expressing deep respect for terroir and outstanding aging potential
BACKGROUND
Château Canon La Gaffelière is a property in Saint-Émilion, producing a wine that is known for its elegance and finesse. The 19.5-hectare (48-acre) vineyard is a mix of clay-limestone and clay-sand soils, with predominantly sandy topsoils. These characteristics are well-suited to the grape varieties planted here: 55 percent Merlot, 40 percent Cabernet Franc and 5 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. At harvest, the grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed, then fermented without crushing in temperature-controlled wooden vats. They are then aged in mostly new oak barrels for up to 20 months.
