FEATURES
🏰 The 1959 vintage for Bordeaux, particularly Saint-Émilion, was generally considered very good, marked by a hot and dry growing season. Wines from this era, like the Château La Clotte 1959, often exhibit a classic old-world style, with a focus on tertiary aromas and a delicate structure that speaks of decades of evolution. While specific detailed reports for Château La Clotte 1959 are scarce, wines from this period and region are known for their potential for longevity. 【A testament to Bordeaux's enduring legacy】. Expect a wine that has gracefully matured, offering nuanced aromas and a soft, ethereal palate. It's a journey through time in a glass. 🍴 This venerable Saint-Émilion, likely a Merlot-dominant blend, would pair beautifully with classic French cuisine that respects its age and delicate nature. Think slow-cooked lamb shoulder, a traditional beef bourguignon, or a rich mushroom risotto. For a more refined experience, consider roasted duck breast with a subtle berry reduction, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Cheddar. 🥂 This 1959 Château La Clotte is a magnificent choice for a milestone anniversary, a significant birthday celebration for someone born in that year, or a very intimate gathering of serious wine enthusiasts. It's a wine for reflection and appreciation, best shared among those who understand the privilege of tasting history. Given its age, handling this bottle requires utmost care. The cork and capsule may be fragile, so a Durand opener or similar device is highly recommended to prevent cork breakage. Decanting is advisable to separate any sediment that has formed over the decades, but do so gently and just before serving to preserve its delicate aromas. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F), in large, elegant glasses to allow its complex bouquet to unfold.
BACKGROUND
Chateau La Clotte is one of the oldest vineyards on the right bank of Bordeaux. The estate has been a working vineyard since the late 14th century. The small 4-hectare vineyard is planted to 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is located behind the village of Saint-Emilion, due east and not far from the Château de Auson, on the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion. They occupy one of the higher elevations in the region, with the highest peak reaching 75 metres. Before the French Revolution, the vineyard was used as a residence for the Cordeliers Friars. Chateau La Clotte as we know it today did not become famous as a vineyard until 1886 when it was purchased by the Grailly family. As was customary at the time, they changed the name of the vineyard to reflect their ownership.
