Chateau Clos Haut Peyraguey, Clos Haut Peyraguey, 2001
🏰 The 2001 vintage in Sauternes was outstanding, widely considered the best of a series of six exceptional years. Ideal weather conditions, including a cool, damp August followed by warm, dry conditions in September and October, provided perfect conditions for noble rot. This led to richly concentrated wines with stunning clarity and precision. Clos Haut-Peyraguey, a First Classified Growth in 1855 Sauternes, is located at the highest point of the hill of Bommes, known for its exceptional terroir and unparalleled exposure.
The 2001 Clos Haut-Peyraguey exhibits abundant Grand Marnier-like orange flavors intermixed with crème brûlée, melted caramels, and hints of pineapples and apricots. It has a very pure and honeyed bouquet with marmalade, quince, and honeysuckle aromas. The palate is full-bodied, ultrasweet, fabulously concentrated, and viscous, with layers of apricot and tropical fruit leading to a very oily, nutty finish. A fine line of acidity keeps the sweetness from being cloying, making it vibrant and food-friendly.
🥂 This is a truly exceptional sweet wine from a legendary vintage, perfect for celebrating significant milestones, a luxurious dessert course, or as a contemplative wine for connoisseurs. It has remarkable aging potential, with some suggesting it can age beautifully for 20-odd years.
🍴 Sauternes is a classic match for foie gras and Roquefort or other blue cheeses. Its luscious sweetness and vibrant acidity also pair well with spicy Asian dishes, apricot tart, crème brûlée, or fruit-based desserts.
