A Ropiteau Mignon, Volnay 1er Cru Clos Des Chenes, 1994
Red
750ml
Label : Very Slightly Bin Stained Soiled Label
Level : Neck Level Filled
🏰 The 1994 vintage in Burgundy was generally considered modest, with wines that matured relatively quickly and have likely faded by now. However, Premier and Grand Cru vineyards, especially on well-draining slopes, often fared better, producing wines with an attractive, fragrant style of fruit. The autumn and winter were exceptionally wet, followed by a dry August, but heavy rains in September made grapes ripe yet sodden, requiring rigorous selection to avoid dilution and rot. Volnay wines are celebrated for their delicacy, elegance, and finesse, often displaying aromas of red berries, violets, and light black pepper. The Clos des Chênes terroir, with its red clay soil over limestone, is known for producing wines with a generous expression and good aging potential. This particular bottling, if well-preserved, offers a rare glimpse into a mature Burgundy from a challenging yet potentially rewarding vintage. 【Elegant and delicate expression of Volnay's Premier Cru terroir】.
🍴 This elegant red Burgundy pairs beautifully with classic roasted meat or poultry dishes. For a truly special experience, consider pairing it with delicate game birds or a mushroom-based risotto.
🥂 This 1994 Volnay is best suited for a quiet, contemplative evening or a special dinner with fellow wine enthusiasts who appreciate the nuances of aged Burgundy. It's a wine for reflection rather than a boisterous celebration. For a wine of this age, the cork and capsule may be fragile, so handle with extreme care. Stand the bottle upright for at least 24-48 hours to allow any sediment to settle. Decanting is recommended for older red Burgundies to separate sediment and allow the wine to breathe, but be gentle and monitor the wine closely for any signs of fading. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (61-64°F).
BACKGROUND
Ropiteau Mignon is a historic negociant house based in Meursault, founded in 1848. While famous for their white wines, they also produce excellent reds from the Cote de Beaune. The Clos des Chenes is one of Volnay's most prestigious Premier Crus, located on a steep, well-drained slope. It yields Pinot Noirs of exceptional elegance, featuring perfumed aromas of violets and red berries, supported by silky tannins and a long finish.
