FEATURES
🏰 The 1989 vintage for the Rhône Valley was exceptionally good, even touted as the vintage of the decade, defined by drought-like conditions throughout the summer. For the Northern Rhône, summer was particularly fierce, with a welcome relief of rain in September over Hermitage and Côte Rôtie. The resulting wines were grand and lusciously rich, with Côte Rôtie wines being particularly good and ageworthy. While specific tasting notes for Les Jumelles 1989 are not explicitly detailed, the vintage generally produced rich and opulent reds, noted for avoiding both jamminess and excessive acidity. After over three decades, expect complex tertiary aromas of dried fruit, leather, spice, and perhaps some earthy or gamey notes, characteristic of aged Syrah from the Northern Rhône. 【 Exceptionally good vintage, touted as the vintage of the decade for Rhône 】 🥂 This 1989 Côte Rôtie is a magnificent wine for a very special occasion, perhaps an anniversary or a significant birthday celebration, where its maturity and complexity can be fully appreciated. It's a wine for connoisseurs who enjoy the nuances of well-aged Syrah. Serving Advice: Wines of this age can be fragile. Stand the bottle upright for several days before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Decant gently just before serving, watching carefully for sediment. Old corks can be brittle, so use a Durand or an Ah-So opener. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F), to best appreciate its evolved aromatics. 🍴 Aged Côte Rôtie pairs wonderfully with rich, savory dishes. Think roasted lamb, venison, beef bourguignon, or dishes featuring truffles and wild mushrooms. Hard, aged cheeses would also be a delightful match.
This wine is known for its strong, bright fruit flavors (red berry, black plum, and black cherry) and complex earthy notes (herbs, hickory smoke, and pepper)
BACKGROUND
Paul Jaboulet has been a part of the Rhône Valley wine industry for almost two centuries, beginning with a small plot of land on the hills of Hermitage, before expanding throughout the region. Today, it encompasses more than 100 hectares (250 acres) of vineyards making wines from the northern and southern Rhône, including Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Condrieu and Cornas. The Paul Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelle is the estate's flagship wine and is one of the most sought-after wines from the Rhône, reaching high prices at auction. It is named for a 13th Century church built atop Hermitage, which became the property of the Maison in 1919. This is made of 100 percent Syrah and the grapes come from the best terroirs the Maison has access to, including famed vineyards Les Bessards, Le Meal and Les Rocoules. There is also a white La Chapelle made from a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, exclusively from the Les Rocoules estate.
