FEATURES
🏰 The Thierry Allemand Cornas Reynard 1998 is a legendary wine from one of Cornas' most revered producers, known for his minimalist approach and exceptional terroir expression. The 1998 vintage in the Northern Rhône was generally considered good, producing wines with solid structure and aging potential, though perhaps not as universally lauded as some blockbuster years. For a wine of this age, expect a beautiful evolution of character. The Cornas Reynard is typically 100% Syrah from old vines in the Reynard lieu-dit, a prime vineyard site. Tasting notes for aged Cornas from Allemand often describe a complex bouquet of dark fruits, black olives, smoked meat, licorice, and a distinct minerality, evolving into notes of leather, truffle, and forest floor with age. The palate is usually powerful yet refined, with firm tannins that soften over time, retaining freshness and a long, savory finish. 【 A legendary expression of Cornas Reynard from a cult producer 】. Serving Advice for Old Wine (1998 Vintage): This 1998 vintage is a true gem, but like all older wines, it requires gentle handling. The cork may be fragile, so use a Durand opener or an Ah-So wine opener to minimize breakage. Decanting is highly recommended for a wine of this age, typically 1-2 hours before serving, to allow it to breathe and shed any sediment. Observe the wine carefully as it decants; if it seems delicate, a shorter decant may be preferable. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F), to best appreciate its evolved aromas and flavors. 🍴 This mature Cornas Reynard would be exquisite with classic French cuisine, such as roasted lamb with herbs, beef bourguignon, or game birds like pheasant or duck. Its savory and earthy notes also complement aged hard cheeses. 🥂 An exceptional choice for a milestone anniversary, a significant birthday celebration, or a serious wine collector's tasting. It's a wine to be savored and contemplated, offering a glimpse into the past and the enduring quality of a master winemaker.
BACKGROUND
Thierry Allemand is a leading producer of wines from the Syrah grape in the Cornas region of the Northern Rhone Valley. Renowned for their varietal expression and velvety texture, the wines have a loyal following and the estate was formed by Alleman starting in the 1980s by purchasing large areas of small abandoned land. Less than 5 hectares (12 acres) in size. Only 500 cases of the top Les Chaillots and Reynard cuvées are available, always in short supply.
