🏰 The 2005 Alain Voge Cornas Les Chailles is a 【superb Cornas from a fantastically good Rhône vintage】, with Cornas being among the jewels of the vintage, offering perfectly balanced wines with ideal structure for long-term cellaring. Highly rated at 93 points by Wine Spectator and 92 by Robert Parker, this Syrah presents a deep garnet red color and a nose of small black berries and liquorice. Expect a juicy palate with red cherry, currant, and raspberry fruit layered with racy mineral and enticing floral notes, leading to a long and tangy finish with great drive. It's a concentrated and powerful wine, showcasing fragrant blackcurrant, raspberry, spring flowers, charcoal, and herbs, with fine and abundant tannins, freshness, and length.
🍴 This powerful Syrah demands hearty pairings such as roasted beef, a shoulder of young lamb, game, or other strong meats. It also excels with rich stews, grilled red meats, or aged hard cheeses. For a robust Asian pairing, consider a slow-cooked five-spice beef brisket.
🥂 A superb Cornas requiring patience, ideal for collectors and special dinners. While it's likely at the end or slightly past its peak drinking window, it can still offer a magnificent and evolved experience.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Alain Voge is a historic and highly respected estate in the Northern Rhône, credited with helping to save the Cornas appellation from obscurity in the mid-20th century. Now farmed biodynamically, the domaine produces powerful, traditional Syrahs. 'Les Chailles' is sourced from vineyards with granite soils mixed with siliceous concretions (chailles). It offers a slightly more approachable style of Cornas, featuring intense dark fruit, cracked black pepper, and a firm, mineral-driven structure.
