🏰 The 2021 vintage in Burgundy was a challenging growing season, marked by April frosts and high disease pressure, which drastically reduced yields by 50-80%. Despite these difficulties, the best red wines from this vintage are noted for their elegance, charm, and impressive intensity and freshness, representing a return to a more 'old school' Burgundy style focused on perfume rather than power. This Alex Moreau Chassagne Montrachet La Cardeuse Rouge 1er Cru 2021, from a producer formerly known as Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils, showcases a medium-plus nose intensity with red and black fruits, mushroom, forest floor, smoke, and cinnamon. It is still youthful, needing time to develop tertiary character and fruit concentration. Expect charming red fruit, sous bois, ample acidity, and a structured palate. The wine presents a succinct bouquet of red berry fruit and rose petal, with fine delineation and poise, leading to a well-balanced palate with fine acidity and a surprising minerality. 【A return to classical Burgundy style with elegance, freshness, and purity, despite a challenging vintage.】
🍴 This elegant red Burgundy pairs beautifully with matured ribeye steak, herb-crusted rack of lamb, aged Époisses cheese, or Brillat-Savarin. It also complements veal and game birds like deer or venison.
🥂 This wine is still youthful but can be enjoyed now. It will gain complexity over the next 10 to 15 years, with optimal drinking anticipated between 2028 and 2035. Serve at 16-17°C (60-63°F) with a light decanting for about an hour to allow it to open up.
