🏰 The 2002 vintage for Brunello di Montalcino was a challenging year due to a cold winter, spring, and early summer with minimal rainfall, followed by frequent rains from early August to late autumn. Despite these difficulties, diligent green harvests and careful grape selection allowed for the production of high-quality wines with charming fruit. Many producers opted not to bottle Riservas in this critical year, with wines often showing imbalance and contracted tannins. However, some estates like Fossacolle managed to produce a Brunello with an intense ruby color, aromas of mature fruits, and a complex palate with silky, persistent tannins, showcasing optimal equilibrium and elegance. The wine is still youthful, with an ample and deep bouquet where characteristic varietal fruit is framed by noble oak spices. On the palate, it is structured with mature, non-aggressive tannins woven into a full body, leading to a warm and persistent aftertaste. 【 A testament to meticulous winemaking in a challenging vintage 】.
🍴 This structured Brunello pairs wonderfully with flavorful dishes such as braised red meats or game, grilled or roasted mixed meats, and savory, well-aged hard cheeses.
🥂 Ideal for a sophisticated dinner party or a special occasion where a mature, complex red wine is appreciated. Given its age, it's perfect for a vertical tasting with other Brunello vintages to observe its evolution. For serving, handle with care due to the potential for an older cork and capsule. Decanting for an hour or two is recommended to allow the wine to fully express its complex aromas and flavors, and serve at 18-20°C (64-68°F) in ample glasses.
