Sylvain Cathiard, Nuits Saint Georges Aux Murgers 1er Cru, 2016
🏰 The 2016 vintage in Burgundy, particularly for Nuits-Saint-Georges, was characterized by a challenging growing season with frost and hail, yet ultimately produced wines of remarkable precision and concentration. Domaine Sylvain Cathiard's Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers 2016 is noted for its precise bouquet, tightly wound with aromas of black cherry, boysenberry, and cold stone. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, focused and tensile, leading to a sorbet-fresh finish. Critics have praised its clockwork-like synchronization of components and its potential for development. 【 A classic Murgers of muscle and power but no rusticity 】.
🍴 This powerful yet elegant red Burgundy would be an excellent match for classic French cuisine such as roasted duck breast with cherry reduction, coq au vin, or a rich beef bourguignon. For an Asian-inspired pairing, consider Peking duck or a savory mushroom hotpot.
🥂 Perfect for a sophisticated dinner party, a special anniversary celebration, or as a centerpiece for a Burgundy tasting event, showcasing the finesse of a challenging but rewarding vintage.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is a highly regarded family wine producer based in Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. Known for its sought-after, high-priced Pinot Noir wines, made from grapes sourced from First and Grand Cru vineyards in Vonn and surrounding appellations. The history of the winery begins with Sylvain’s grandfather, who started making wine in Burgundy in the 1930s. Later, descendants took over the winery and ran it until the 1980s. With approximately 5 hectares (12 acres) of vines, its most prestigious wines come from this Grand Cru vineyard, and its portfolio also includes several Grand Cru wines from Nuit-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée.
