🏰 The 2020 "Coeur de Combard" from Julien Barge is hailed as a remarkable young Côte-Rôtie, following up on the brilliant 2019 vintage. This micro-production wine comes from a unique volcanic terroir within the appellation, specifically the 'secteur volcan' of the lieu-dit Le Combard, an incredibly steep, walled, south/southwest-facing hillside with magmatic bedrock outcrops. The 2020 vintage is noted for its ripeness, offering a superb bouquet and gorgeous depth of fruit. 【 Micro-production from a unique volcanic terroir 】
On the nose, it delivers cassis, black raspberries, spit-roasted venison, pepper, stoney soil tones, sweet stem notes, woodsmoke, and a hint of cedary oak. It is also described as fragrant and complex with notes of violets, tea leaves, and black pepper framing dark fruit. The palate is pure, full-bodied, with great mineral drive and grip, ripe, well-integrated tannins, and a long, complex, seamlessly balanced finish. It's supple and concentrated, with a juicy core of black cherry and poised acidity. While young, it shows pure, precise red fruit and an elegant character, suggesting it should be cellared for a few more years to fully develop.
🍴 This Côte-Rôtie pairs exceptionally well with roasted game birds like pheasant or duck, grilled lamb, or rich beef dishes. Its peppery and savory notes also complement dishes with herbs and spices, or even a hearty mushroom ragout.
🥂 An excellent choice for a special dinner, a gathering of Rhône wine aficionados, or for cellaring to enjoy its evolving complexity over the next 7-10 years.
